Magento Extensions Review - 1

As usual i am going to be introducing completely out of sync topics to my Blog.

I need to review some Magento Extensions for some work & need this to be available for easy reference.. Was going to make a file first.. But then thought why not a blog ? Much more useful for others as well ! So here goes..

The Magento Connect Categorization is & navigation is pretty awful & it seems its not crawled very well by Google.. Hence this effort.. Maybe i will resort these blogs later to put them in more sensible categorisations

My picks from Magento Connect Category - Catalog

1. Category List

Shows Category list on Home Page with image, title & (short description ?)

Screenshot :

2. Search Engine Friendly Layered Nav and Sort

Changes url structure to include category name along with sub category names .
Eg :

Would become

3. Multi Fees

This one looks like it will be a must have for most sites.. You can provide additional services to clients

Multi Fees extension makes it possible to add any number of additional services (fees) and service groups like Gift Cards, Gift Wraps, Rush Delivery Service or whatever you may want customer to be able to select before the order checkout. Fee cost can be set either to a flat rate or a percent of an order subtotal. Selected fees are being added to the order total and then visible to admin on the Order view page.

  • Unlimited number of additional services and fees combined in groups
  • Each fee option can have its own logo and image
  • 'Additional Fees' column is available in Sales Report
  • Fee can be either a flat rate or a percent of an order subtotal
  • 3 input types for your fees: checkbox, drop-down, radio button
  • Store view independent settings and translations
  • Pre-configured static block for additional fees description

4. Magento AjaxPro Extension
AjaxPro extension delivers amazing user experience to your customers. They can add to cart, wishlist and compare products with out page reload.

- A must-have extension for every ecommerce website.
- Supports all major browsers.
- Based on prototype library
- Easy 1 minute installation
- Completely configurable through admin interface
- Add to cart
- Add to compare
- Add to wishlist
- Works on shopping cart page
- Confirmation dialog

5. Edit Configuration in Cart

Allows you to edit product configuration for Configurable products in cart..

I wonder if there is one for Bundle products.

6. Shopping Cart Editor

And voila ! My Question is answered with this extension !
Shopping Cart Editor enables your shoppers to edit Custom Options, Configurable Product Options and Bundled Product Options right in the shopping cart.
Shopping Cart Editor enables your shoppers to edit Custom Options, Configurable Product Options and Bundled Product Options right in the shopping cart. This means that when your shoppers change their mind about some details in their order, they won’t change their mind about making the purchase.

This is a must-have for stores that carry products with custom options, configurable and/or bundled products.

The extension comes with a User Manual and is 100% Open Source.

7. JC Import Export for Categories

Surprisingly Magento does not come with an inbuilt impirt export profile for Categories. This extension fills the GAP.

8. Bulk Product import with Support for tier pricing, bundled products etc..

Another issue with Magento is handling the complex product structures you can build in Magento for Import Export.. This extension promisses to do all this.. See their descrition below.

9. One Step Checkout
This One Step Checkout extension add 6 steps of original Magento checkout to 1 step.
This extension add 6 steps of original Magento checkout to 1 step.
Now, customer only need to make on click to place an order.
Load all necessary information immediately when customer click checkout.
When customer change shipping information, shipping costs are reloaded automatically using ajax without clicking button.
It's the same when customer choose shipping method and payment, order review is reloaded.
All functions of original checkout are kept.

10. Custom Menus

Another things that bothers me in magento is the lack of a Menu Manager. This extension lets you make custom menus. Add fully configurable menus to your Magento installation. Build menus with links to products, categories, CMS pages, blogs, external urls ... anything!

11. Configurable Checkout

Ever wanted to get rid of the Shipping part of Magento's checkout ? Get rid of other unnecessary information in checkout ? Well this extension is supposed to be able to do that..

Only downside ? Works only with One Page checkout..

With Configurable Checkout Extension you can disable unnecessary checkout fields and steps. The extension works only with One Page Checkout.

List of features:
* Allows to disable Shipping information, Shipping Method, Payment Information steps
* Allows to disable any fields of Billing Information, Shipping Method, Payment Information steps, except for e-mail, first name and last name
* Compatible with AITOC’s Checkout Fields Manager which allows for adding extra fields to the checkout process
* Comes with a User Manual
* 100% Open Source

12. Custommer Quotation
Create customized quotations for customers
Magento Quote Module is Designed to Help Webiste owner to propose to their customer customized quotes containing products with specific prices and delivery conditions. You also can print quote to PDF Format or simply notify customer by email.
Once quote is activated, customer can view it from customer area, print quotation or add it to cart.
In addition, a form on frontend allows customer to request for a quote.

13. Checkout Fields Manager

Allows you to add fields to virtually any checkout step. With it you can collect all additional info you might need from your customers. Many input types supported: text field, text area, dropdown, date, etc.

14. Ajax Cart Pro

AJAX Cart Pro allows customers to add and remove products without having to click the update button. Only the shopping cart is refreshed. The interaction is immediate what allows users to continue shopping without waiting for the page refresh.

15. Frequently brought together
Frequently Bought Together has been created to substitute and significantly improve functionality and usability of Magento core module Related Products.
Seems like a good product to show rel, ated products right inside the product landing page.

Thats all for now.. Will follow up with some more for more interesting extensions . Let me know if you know any that i should consider !

How Weddings Begin

In my case, this did not happen... but traditionally the parents of the bride or groom to be, will start looking for suitable suitors for their child. Profiles of the would be groom or bride will be created at 'Wadhuwar Suchak Mandals' ( Matchmakers ) both online & offline, close relatives will be notified & subtle hints dropped here & there that 'we are looking' ..

Once some suitors have been short listed, arranged dates (for which the would be bride & groom are accompanied by their respective parents & sometimes close relatives as well & which are usually held at one of their homes ) are setup. This is known as a 'Chaha Pohe Karyakram' ( As traditionally Tea & Poha- A popular food item are served). A string of such dates take place before the match is made.

Sakharpuda or the Ring Ceremony

Once the couple is finalised, an engagement ceremony takes place this is known as Sakharpuda. This in our case was almost a mini marriage since even close people from both sides came to 300+ !

My Wedding : 16th June 2009 - My Blogs about it...

I am gonna get married on the 16th of this month.. A lot of people have expressed interest about what an Indian Wedding is all about. So i decided to blog & twit about it as & when i can get some time out from the ceremonies..

First the basics..

Who's the Guy ?
Thats me , Parth Lawate
Who's the Gurl ?
That would be Himangi Chhatre

We got engaged on 28th Dec an year & half back.

Now India is big country with a lot of religions with plenty of regional variations. So what you will see here is a typical wedding taking place at Pune, Maharashtra. Now with weddings in India one of the most important things is a huge number of ceremonies that accompany the wedding & a huge amount of food with very diverse menus.

This is what i have planned for this blog series.. Lets see how it goes..

1. Traditional Way of 'Setting up' the wedding ( The arranged method ) . Since i met the girl directly & we ended up falling in love..its a Love marraige.. but this is how it would go by the traditional route.

2. Pre Marraige Ceremonies & Planning & Shopping..Loads of it !

3. The Marraige Ceremonies ( This would consitute live blogging when possible with photos)

4. Post Marraige Ceremonies

Tweet your Business !

The biggest advantage of using a media like twitter is that it keeps all the interested parties involved on a per second basis. News is said to travel fast, but using media like twitter it can really blaze across.

But in order to be effectively use this medium, it is necessary to build a large following for the accounts that will be used by the company for 'tweeting'. The best way to build a good following of people is by providing Quality content that your target market is interested in.

What should be your strategy ?

A. Build up a following

  1. Schedule regular tweet casts ( Information bits about a specific subject) which are relevant to your target audiences. These should be promoted through tweets & other media so that you can get a good following by even just promoting them.

  2. Tweet Retweetable stuff!
  3. Follow Quality tweeters.

  4. Make sure you don't post anything that will make you detriment your stature among the twitters.

  5. Let all your customers know that you tweet & invite them to follow you.

  6. Also build a following of re tweeters !

B. What to tweet & how to tweet

  1. Announce anything & everything that will get you more traffic & event better conversions.

  2. Twitter is a great place to offer Promo codes & promotions. They travel blazingly fast.

  3. Announce your products, do tweet casts of their features & benefits.

  4. Promote your blogs on twitter, in fact promote your site, sites that you made, sites that you use your extensions on twitter.

  1. Tweet about others at least as much as you Tweet about yourself.

  2. Make sure that your marketing efforts on Twitter engage in conversation

  3. Live updates on events or conferences

C. What else should be done ?

  1. Monitor your company / brand on Twitter : Services like will allow you to do that.

  2. Another good idea might be to monitor your competition as well.

Have some more ideas ? Any new sites like tweetbeep that you know of ? Do comment to let me & others know.

Dont miss Neera (Nira) when you visit Pune

Come Hot summers & these small boxes selling this beautiful drink spring up in a thousand places in & around Pune..

Neera is basically the unfermented sap of the flower of the Palm tree. It has very short shelf life & if left unrefrigerated can quickly get converted to Palm wine or Tadi.
Its very refreshing & very Healthy ( I can only speak of the unfermented version! )

Monitoring your Power consumption with Google

About 2 years ago i had tried out a pilot project to monitor our everyday home power usage using simple Spreadsheets. The idea was to monitor power consumption on a daily basis & have an everyday watch on how much was being spent on electricity. I found that maintaining this sheet itself helped reduce bills by quite a significant quantity.

Of Course it is necessary to remember that this experiment was carried out in Pune & in the house of a 'Kokya' ( Dont want to go into specifics of this here .. it will be enough to state here that it signifies a guy very unwilling to spend much money , as it goes against my secular upbringing to diferenciate on basis of caste- which is what 'Kokya' signifies) .

What i found was that this kind of monitoring helped in getting the people in the household to actively try to switch of unwanted power sources thus decressing the load.

I had suggested to a lot of people that if we could do this in an online application that could be shared & a kind of power saving competition helping save loads of electricity.

Reading Google's announcement of its Power Meter inspired me yet again to do something to take that initiative forward.

Read Google's official announcement here :

Official Google Blog: Power to the people: "addition to policy advocacy, we're building consumer tools, too. Over the last several months, our engineers have developed a software tool called Google PowerMeter, which will show consumers their home energ"

It'll be still quite sometime before something like this hits our homes.. So we plan to make an application that will bridge the gap.

Community Builder Validation in Plugins

Do you want to use native CB validation in the plugins you build for CB ?

Just use mosreq="1" moslabel="Field label"

Eg :

input="" class="inputbox" moslabel=" Contact Number" mosreq="1" value="" id="cb_pricon" name="cb_pricon" type="text"

Hope you find this useful!

Whats Google got against Linux ?

What with all this plus loads of features like Offline Gmail, Canned responses etc. coming out in such a time span Google definitely seems on the roll. But i have one major complaint with Google, which promises to 'Do no Evil' & support Open Source technologies to the hilt, is that when it comes to rolling out its features it certainly does a lot of 'evil' by not giving linux systems higher priority.

Several of its features & products like Google Desktop, Gtalk, Video in Chat etc etc either dont run on linux or do so with extremely limited features. Some like Picasa need Wine to run.

I can understand that many of its clients are on Windows or macs. But just think if Google would roll out features on Linux first & then roll them out on other Os's a year or so later how many people would be using the other Os's..

Yes they do fund a lot of Open Source work, support Linux & are a licensee of the Open Invention Network (OIN) but still when it comes to their own products Linux fares much lower than other operating systems..

Google please please please give Linux as high if not higher priority !

People please comment on this & show support for this cause.. Hopefully we can move google to notice atleast!
