Dont miss Neera (Nira) when you visit Pune

Come Hot summers & these small boxes selling this beautiful drink spring up in a thousand places in & around Pune..

Neera is basically the unfermented sap of the flower of the Palm tree. It has very short shelf life & if left unrefrigerated can quickly get converted to Palm wine or Tadi.
Its very refreshing & very Healthy ( I can only speak of the unfermented version! )

Monitoring your Power consumption with Google

About 2 years ago i had tried out a pilot project to monitor our everyday home power usage using simple Spreadsheets. The idea was to monitor power consumption on a daily basis & have an everyday watch on how much was being spent on electricity. I found that maintaining this sheet itself helped reduce bills by quite a significant quantity.

Of Course it is necessary to remember that this experiment was carried out in Pune & in the house of a 'Kokya' ( Dont want to go into specifics of this here .. it will be enough to state here that it signifies a guy very unwilling to spend much money , as it goes against my secular upbringing to diferenciate on basis of caste- which is what 'Kokya' signifies) .

What i found was that this kind of monitoring helped in getting the people in the household to actively try to switch of unwanted power sources thus decressing the load.

I had suggested to a lot of people that if we could do this in an online application that could be shared & a kind of power saving competition helping save loads of electricity.

Reading Google's announcement of its Power Meter inspired me yet again to do something to take that initiative forward.

Read Google's official announcement here :

Official Google Blog: Power to the people: "addition to policy advocacy, we're building consumer tools, too. Over the last several months, our engineers have developed a software tool called Google PowerMeter, which will show consumers their home energ"

It'll be still quite sometime before something like this hits our homes.. So we plan to make an application that will bridge the gap.

Community Builder Validation in Plugins

Do you want to use native CB validation in the plugins you build for CB ?

Just use mosreq="1" moslabel="Field label"

Eg :

input="" class="inputbox" moslabel=" Contact Number" mosreq="1" value="" id="cb_pricon" name="cb_pricon" type="text"

Hope you find this useful!

Whats Google got against Linux ?

What with all this plus loads of features like Offline Gmail, Canned responses etc. coming out in such a time span Google definitely seems on the roll. But i have one major complaint with Google, which promises to 'Do no Evil' & support Open Source technologies to the hilt, is that when it comes to rolling out its features it certainly does a lot of 'evil' by not giving linux systems higher priority.

Several of its features & products like Google Desktop, Gtalk, Video in Chat etc etc either dont run on linux or do so with extremely limited features. Some like Picasa need Wine to run.

I can understand that many of its clients are on Windows or macs. But just think if Google would roll out features on Linux first & then roll them out on other Os's a year or so later how many people would be using the other Os's..

Yes they do fund a lot of Open Source work, support Linux & are a licensee of the Open Invention Network (OIN) but still when it comes to their own products Linux fares much lower than other operating systems..

Google please please please give Linux as high if not higher priority !

People please comment on this & show support for this cause.. Hopefully we can move google to notice atleast!
